CalmReef

Interactive modules to help you recharge.

CalmReef represents a new stage in the development of our approach to designing objects that support relief and emotional self-regulation. The success of the CalmCave project demonstrated the enormous potential of well-designed sensory stimulation. During the Dutch Design Week 2025, we received extensive feedback from people experiencing burnout, as well as individuals on the autism spectrum and with ADHD, who emphasized how important solutions for regulating sensory input and restoring emotional balance are to them.

However, CalmCave is primarily intended for public spaces – offices, airports, schools, and institutions. That is why we want to translate its core value into a more compact and accessible form that can also be used in private environments. This led to the creation of CalmReef – a set of modular, interactive, sensory panels that can function as an extension of CalmCave, but also as standalone solutions integrated into existing furniture and interiors.

It is designed for people who are particularly affected by the negative consequences of sensory overload and the pace of modern life: neurodivergent individuals (including people on the autism spectrum and with ADHD), people experiencing sensory overload, burnout, mental health crises, and highly sensitive individuals. This group needs tools that enable them to quickly regain emotional balance, calm themselves, and support self-regulation – without having to leave home or rely on public spaces.

Their key need is the creation of a safe, predictable, and calming environment that provides relief in stressful situations and helps manage overstimulation. CalmReef addresses these needs by allowing users to independently compose their own set of modules. Users can choose the elements that best support their individual sensory profile – a light panel for breathing regulation and focus, a calming module with gentle nature sounds and sound-masking technology, or a soothing sensory module featuring different textures and scents. This makes the experience highly personalized, while also allowing the system to expand alongside users changing needs.

The project is based on slow-tech principles, providing stimuli designed to relax rather than overstimulate. The modules create a multisensory environment that supports self-regulation, mindfulness, and rest. They are being developed with accessibility in mind so they can also be used by blind and visually impaired people, as well as individuals with limited motor abilities. Clear, calming interactions and the absence of aggressive stimuli will make CalmReef accessible to a wide range of users.

A second important target group consists of institutions – therapy offices, schools, community centers, hospital wards, and psychological support facilities. Many such spaces lack the room or budget for larger solutions such as the CalmCave. CalmReef’s modularity makes it possible to introduce the benefits of sensory stimulation in a compact, more affordable, and easily adaptable format. As a result, institutions can provide emotional regulation tools that genuinely improve users comfort, safety, and well-being.

CalmReef increases access to technologies that support mental well-being, giving users the opportunity to create their own personal space of relief and calm – regardless of space limitations, budget, or the character of the environment.
